Who or what inspired you to pursue a career in music?
My mother played the accordion and she has always been my inspiration: it was because of her passion for music that I started studying piano.
Who or what were the most significant influences on your musical life?
Several professors: Marta Christel, Claudie Desmeules, Emilio Muriscot and Michael Davidson, but in reality the people who inspire me to compose new pieces the most are the “people of the street”, everyday people who I encounter in my life….
What have been the greatest challenges/frustrations of your career so far?
Every day is a challenge because you never know what you are going to create.
Which performance/recordings are you most proud of?
I don’t like to highlight any in particular because in all of my performances I imagine and I hope there is something special…the most important thing is to move people.
Which particular works do you think you play best?
I do not know what I play better but I guess it’s my own music – I try to caress music with the sole intention of moving hearts and reaching people within.
How do you make your repertoire choices from season to season?
In choosing my repertoire for my ‘1 Piano & 200 Candles’ concerts, I focus on playing my own compositions – the new ones as well as pieces I have played for some time. I also try to innovate with some new compositions. The concept behind ‘1 Piano & 200 Candles’ is to create a unique experience in unusual venues and locations. The idea is a special and intimate concert, which also guides the format of the performances.
Do you have a favourite concert venue to perform in and why?
For me, each place is special. I do not like to choose one thing in life – each place has its own magic. The candles that I bring to my performances make the spaces even more ethereal and allow the audience’s listening experience to be enhanced due to the beauty of the dancing light.
Who are your favourite musicians?
I almost do not listen to music so as not to be intoxicated with other melodies, and so what is born is authentic. I do however enjoy the music of Yann Tiersen and Ennio Morricone.
What is your most memorable concert experience?
I have very good memories of concerts in Mexico with the public standing and screaming “bravo”…it was very exciting!
How would you characterise your compositional language?
Intimate and straight to the heart.
As a composer, how do you work?
I do not work haha! – it just comes out or does not work out
Who are your favourite musicians/composers?
Bach: his music contains everything – beauty, balance…it inspires me with happiness.
As a musician, what is your definition of success?
A musician is successful when they are able to thrill millions of people with their music and that music becomes the soundtrack to everyone’s lives…
What do you consider to be the most important ideas and concepts to impart to aspiring musicians?
I believe they need to have the ability to fight; they need dedication, talent and a lot of imagination
Where would you like to be in 10 years’ time?
My dream is to have scored a big feature film and for my music to touch many more people…
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
When you have love, you have everything…
What is your most treasured possession?
The ability to create music from nothing.
What is your present state of mind?
Crazy!
